The former village of the Gottschee Germans is situated in a hilly country, next to a road Struge–Kočevje. German word Tiefenthal means »deep in a valley«. The settlement originates from 1558, when Count Franc Blagay – a leaseholder of The Kočevje County – allowed to his subjects to clear land for making an inhabitable space. At the time of its formation, Tieffenthal counted three whole estates, which were divided into six halfway farms with nine landlords, according to the Kočevje Registry Book. This meant 35-40 inhabitants of the village.

The former village of the Gottschee Germans is situated right at the edge, in the southeast of a system of valleys in the Kočevje region, at 510 m above the sea level.  It is surrounded by a hill Šibje (in the northeast) and a hill Pevska gorica (in the southwest). The name Rajndol might be a simplification – the Slovenians could recoin a German expression »Tal am Rein«, meaning a clean and clear valley. It makes sense, when one looks at the position of Rajndol. This place had already been inhabited before the arrival of Germans. Next to the village, a prehistoric burial place was discovered.
